Culture & Leisure

The Harz unites scenic beauty, history and culture more than almost any other region of Saxony-Anhalt. Striking tourist magnets attract millions of visitors each year, for example the UNESCO world heritage town of Quedlinburg, the Falkenstein Castle, the Halberstadt Cathedral with its precious treasure, the Huysburg Monastery or the enchanting castle of Wernigerode.

Theater, music, arts

Changing performances, exciting world premieres and intercultural community projects are typical the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater with houses in Halberstadt and Quedlinburg. Cultural open-air enjoyment can be experienced in a beautiful setting in the Harzer Bergtheater. More culture & theater

The concerts of the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra Wernigerode or the extraordinary soirees in the Michaelstein Abbey near Blankenburg (Harz) ensure very special goosebumps moments. If you prefer to learn playing music yourself, the Kreismusikschule Harz supports you in your personal instrument selection. Lovers of rock and electronic dance music will also get their money's worth right below the summit of our local mountain at the Rocken am Brocken festival. There is something for every music lover! Sports & nature

The imposing nature invites you to linger. The impressive Ilse valley, the wild and romantic Bode valley, the Teufelsmauer (Devil's wall) at Weddersleben, the legendary Hexentanzplatz, the idyllic Harz foreland, the Selke valley, the Harz National Park and of course the Brocken, which stands majestically out of the low mountain range, are popular hiking destinations for young and old. Through the "Harz Walking Needle Project" locals and Harz friends from near and far can explore the hiking trail network with more than 10,000 km by collecting 222 stamps at distinct points. The quality hiking trail "Harzer-Hexen-Stieg" leads over 97 km from Osterode in the western Harz across the Brocken to Thale.

Winter in the Harz is ideal for ice skating or skiing, and optimal for ski jumping or relaxing hours in the many leisure and thermal baths. With the warming sun in spring, the season starts for all mountain bike or road bike fans, for whom there are numerous breathtaking and challenging routes in the Harz mountains.
