The Harz is rich in cultural and historical evidence: well-preserved castles, fortresses, monasteries and parks as well as mines and mining monuments provide interesting insights into the history of the region. Sports & nature
The imposing nature invites you to linger. The impressive Ilse valley, the wild and romantic Bode valley, the Teufelsmauer (Devil's wall) at Weddersleben, the legendary Hexentanzplatz, the idyllic Harz foreland, the Selke valley, the Harz National Park and of course the Brocken, which stands majestically out of the low mountain range, are popular hiking destinations for young and old. Through the "Harz Walking Needle Project" locals and Harz friends from near and far can explore the hiking trail network with more than 10,000 km by collecting 222 stamps at distinct points. The quality hiking trail "Harzer-Hexen-Stieg" leads over 97 km from Osterode in the western Harz across the Brocken to Thale.
Winter in the Harz is ideal for ice skating or skiing, and optimal for ski jumping or relaxing hours in the many leisure and thermal baths. With the warming sun in spring, the season starts for all mountain bike or road bike fans, for whom there are numerous breathtaking and challenging routes in the Harz mountains.
