In Wernigerode is the only field office of the internationally recognized Federal Institute for Non-Communicable and Infectious Diseases, which is directly subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Health. Today, the modern laboratories in Wernigerode are considered the national reference center for salmonella, staphylococci and other bacterial enteritis pathogens. The main research area in addition to bacterial infections is life-threatening antibiotic resistance.
